The Sundance Film Festival is an important film festival dedicated to independent cinema, founded by the Utah Film Commission in 1978 under the name of Utah / United States Film Festival.
The festival was renamed in 1991 into Sundance Film Festival by the Sundance Institute, a nonprofit organization sponsored by Robert Redford, who assumed the organizational power and the artistic direction of the event. The festival was also moved from Salt Lake City to the nearby ski resort of Park City and from September to January.
The coincidence with the skiing high season allowed it to to become a major showcase of independent US and international independent cinema.
